Weatherization is the nation’s largest residential energy efficiency program and aims to reduce the energy costs of low-income families through energy-efficient weatherization measures. Weatherization specifically focuses on assisting low-income people – primarily the elderly, persons with disabilities, and families with children. Weatherization addresses this need for assistance by sending professionally trained crews into homes to determine which energy efficiency measures are appropriate, emphasizing the most cost-effective measures and those which are essential for the health and safety of the occupants.
Recently, the CAC Weatherization office received grant funding from the Knoxville Extreme Energy Makeover (KEEM) to perform energy efficient retrofits on 20,000 homes in the Knoxville community. Through this grant, the office hopes to reduce energy costs for families in low to mid-income homes thus increasing financial independence, provide education in energy-efficient practices, and address health and safety concerns.
