Sustainability is the ability to meet our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This requires cooperation between sectors and long term thinking. Since 2007, the City of Knoxville’s Energy & Sustainability Initiative has helped make Knoxville a greener, more sustainable city – one where the economy, environment, and community can thrive today and in the future. This initiative directly led to the creation and staffing of the City’s Office of Sustainability which now includes our CAC AmeriCorps member.

The office’s mission, backed by the initiative, is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with City operations and the Knoxville community each by 20% by 2020, increase the amount of waste that is recycled or mulched instead of sent to a landfill,  improve urban food systems, create better infrastructure for greener forms of transportation, and inform and address community needs and questions of sustainable practices that ensures a higher quality of life.
