Project GRAD (VISTA)

Currently recruiting for 2018-2019 service year.

According to a July 2017 Complete Tennessee policy brief titled Apprenticeships, Internships, & Other Education to Career Programs,

“High impact practices such as apprenticeships, internships, and other education-to-career programs have proven to increase student success and postsecondary completion especially for underserved populations.  However, underserved populations tend to have less access to these services.”

Project GRAD Knoxville will expand our Hands on the Future Summer Institute experiences established in 2002 to add paid summer internships (at minimum wage or higher).  Logistics will be developed during the 2017-18 school year and piloted in Summer 2018.   This VISTA member will take the lessons learned by the GRAD organization in the Summer 2018 pilot and capacity-build processes, design materials, and refine program protocols for future GRAD summer internships, improving efficiency, scope and ability to connect students in challenging circumstances with paid summer placements in collaboration with local business and nonprofit partners.  The work of the VISTA will reduce students’ personal and economic barriers to pursuing their goals through a real-world, paid work experience.  Project GRAD’s internships are being modeled after STEP UP Chattanooga; STEP UP staff is providing start-up guidance and support to Project GRAD Knoxville.

Official VISTA Assignment Description will be available soon.
