Compost & Recycling Coordinator – Sevier Solid Waste

At Sevier Solid Waste, Inc., we believe in preserving our beautiful Smoky Mountain home for generations to come.  Therefore, we compost all the organic waste from Sevier County and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The primary goal of the Compost & Recycling Coordinator is to raise awareness in Sevier County as to how SSWI handles the County’s waste stream in order to educate businesses and residents on how to dispose of waste properly to improve SSWI’s compost and recycling.  In addition, he/she will work to educate people on the benefits of using compost, establish relationships for new applications of using compost and increase recycling within the community.  

Position Summary:
  • Create a strong social media presence on recycling and composting
  • Attend public meetings, both as a participant and as a speaker to engage community members on compost and recycling
  • Create educational campaign on problem of wet waste targeted to local restaurants
  • Establish a relationship with City/County to promote the use of compost for alternative solutions for erosion control
  • Establish a relationship with TDOT for compost to be used for roadway construction and stabilization and stream bank mitigation projects
  • Create marketing collateral to promote compost use
  • Research other City, County, and State organization’s compost applications as it relates to erosion control and their respective department of transportation
  • Visually inspect SSWI’s composting process to include collecting and analyzing data on the compost and operations to improve the quality of compost.  This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Sample compost from discharge daily to examine quality of composting including look, texture and moisture content
    • Monitor compost operations to make recommendations to improve quality of compost
    • Measure heights in digesters daily to ensure waste load in digester is at level to produce quality compost
    • Collect compost samples monthly to measure and record stability
    • Track incoming loads for wet and dry waste
  • Visually inspect SSWI’s recycling process to include collecting and analyzing data on recycling facility to improve the recycling operations.  This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Monitor recycling operations to make recommendations to improve quality of recycling commodities and reduce contamination
    • Track data on system to improve efficiency
  • Participate in local festivals, fairs and community events to engage residents on recycling and composting.  This includes:
    • Participate in a variety of community organizations/activities to promote SSWI
    • Create booth displays
    • Prepare presentations
  • Meet with event organizers including sporting events, conferences, festivals and fairs to promote waste free events
  • Work in liaison with established waste free event organizers to coordinate logistics and provide solutions for challenges
  • Plan and coordinate special events to raise awareness of recycling and composting
  • Coordinate and lead tours of SSWI
  • Additional job duties as requested by management
