Data Analyst and Office Coordinator – UT Sustainability

The UT Office of Sustainability is committed to promoting the responsible consumption of human, economic, and environmental resources on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. We use holistic data collection and analysis to inform sustainability initiatives and develop collaborations with campus and community partners to reduce the environmental impacts of the University’s operations, all while engaging the campus community in what it means to Make Orange Green.

Position Summary:
  • Complete annual greenhouse gas emissions report on SIMAP (Sustainability Indicator Management & Analysis Platform)
  • Gather data to input into the STARS report (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) and SDG reports
  • Assist with waste diversion totals and other sustainability metrics throughout the year and prepare annual and fiscal year reports
  • Perform gap analysis of collected data and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Assist other team members in their data collection
  • Travel across campus to collect water and energy usage from residence halls for POWER Challenge (Programs of Water, Energy, and Recycling) month or EcoChallenge as needed
  • Analyze results of various surveys created and distributed by the Office of Sustainability
  • Serve as secretary for the Committee on the Campus Environment (CCE) and the Student Environmental Initiatives Committee (SEIC) and potentially other committees by creating agendas, taking notes and attendance, keeping voting records, organizing budgets and proposals, following up on assignments and reporting back
  • Recruit, train, and work with student assistants as needed and submit their bi-weekly time sheets
  • Assist with Zero Waste GameDay/Events during home football weeks and on home football game weekends or for other large events at the stadium or other venues.
  • Help to develop, maintain and continuously improve the Sustainability Portal database and associated platform(s)
  • If needed, coordinate the sustainability email and direct to appropriate team members for specifics related to their roles
  • If needed, compile reports on weekly, game day, and annual Office of Sustainability totals and accomplishments, and create fun facts with the data to publish
  • Participate in educational interventions for k-12 students to educate potential college students on sustainability practices
  • Assist other team members and Sustainability Manager with various projects and tasks as assigned

The member(s) in this position will have the opportunity to gain the following skills/credentials:

  • Secretarial skills, including preparing purchase orders, billing, arranging large meetings, filing, and fielding questions on sustainability topics
  • Event planning
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency in WordPress
Site Preferences/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field with preference for those whose coursework included sustainability, environmental and earth sciences, statistics, computer science, and/or business.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of sustainability efforts within higher education or community organizations or experience working with a college or university sustainability office
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on a wide range of task
  • Proficient in managing data in Excel and Google Sheets
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to create and give presentations to small and large (30+) groups
