Environmental Scientist – Little River Watershed Association

About Little River Watershed Association:

The Little River Watershed Association is an East Tennessee based nonprofit that is the “voice of the Little River”. We are an environmental education and conservation group that focuses on outreach and protection of the Little River Watershed and all things that are affected by it. LRWA exists to protect and enhance the Little River and its tributaries through grassroots efforts and a community based approach of environmental stewardship.

Position Summary:
  • Perform field work with mandated protocol both under the direct supervision of executive director and independently.
  • Record accurate data.
  • Keep and organize digital and analog data logs.
  • Assist on project reporting.
  • Assist LRWA with other operations as time allows. Including but not limited to: attending outreach events, assisting with environmental education efforts, and assisting with media releases.
  • This opportunity is a mix of field work, in-office work, and teleservice time.
  • The field based experience involves wading in rushing rivers over uneven terrain, being exposed to outdoor elements during multiple seasons. Activities range from carrying scientific equipment to managing multiple students with ages ranging from 6-75.
  • Teleservice and office time will be arranged between staff and Americorps member and is subject to change depending on project outcomes.

Site Preferences/Qualifications:
  • Recent graduate in environmental science, environmental studies, resource management, biological sciences, or related fields.
  • Experience following data collection protocol and recording collected data.
  • General knowledge of freshwater ecosystems.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, navigate uneven terrain, rushing rivers, and be okay being exposed to outdoor elements during multiple seasons.
  • Ability to complete work independently and in a timely manner.
  • Possess technical writing skills.
  • Comfortability with public speaking/public outreach situations.
