What is IST?

In-Service Training (IST) is more than just an AmeriCorps VISTA professional development opportunity – it’s a transformative experience that recharges a passion for service and equips service members with practical tools to make a meaningful impact. While IST is geared toward first year VISTA members, it is open to all VISTAs pending site supervisor approval.
The goal of IST is simple, yet profound: to empower VISTA members to thrive during their service terms through workshops, networking, and hands-on activities. Over three days, participants engage in a variety of personal and professional development seminars designed to enhance their effectiveness and resilience.
The most recent IST took place in Oak Brook, Illinois, just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. Among the attendees were CAC AmeriCorps members Fatima Bryant, Christina Slabinski, and Monica Yost, who participated in workshops designed to amplify the skills and resources they bring to their service projects.
Workshops That Make a Difference:
One standout session focused on resource development for service projects. Participants learned to think beyond financial or material donations, recognizing that resources also include time, expertise, and community connections. Small group discussions explored strategies to make resource acquisition more effective, whether by engaging local donors or leveraging community networks to deliver trainings and educational opportunities

The training featured a wide range of workshops, including:
- Preparing to Speak with Confidence: Enhancing public speaking skills to inspire and communicate effectively.
- Serve and Thrive: Practical techniques to combat burnout and compassion fatigue.
- Communicating your Accomplishments After Service: Translating AmeriCorps service into resume-worthy skills for career advancement.
Christina Slabinski, a CAC VISTA member serving with KCDC, appreciated the hands-on approach. “I liked how each workshop ended with a practical activity and an opportunity to put our new skills into practice,” they shared.
Why IST Matters:
When asked about the highlight of their IST experience, Christina didn’t hesitate: “All expenses were paid for by AmeriCorps! I got to meet a lot of cool people working on impactful projects in their communities without worrying about travel or meals.”
Despite being a second-year VISTA member, Christina found the training valuable. “The workshops were insightful and made me reflect on my experiences. I was reminded that the work I’m doing has an impact – both in the community and on myself.”
A Reminder of Purpose:

For those considering IST, Christina offers this encouragement:
“Sometimes it can feel like the service we do is futile or has a minimal impact. IST is a great opportunity to re-center yourself around other service-minded people. It’s a reminder that what we do matters to our communities and that there are others who not only believe the world can be a better place, but are actively working to make it so.”
Whether you’re a first-year VISTA or a seasoned member, IST provides a space to learn, connect and reaffirm your commitment to service. It’s not just about personal growth – it’s about becoming a better advocate for the communities you serve.
If you are a VISTA member interested in attending IST after reading this article, make sure to check your email! VISTA communicates all training and IST dates through member emails. If you miss one training, there’s always an opportunity to attend another.
So, if you’re a VISTA member looking for inspiration and practical tools to enhance your service year, don’t miss the chance to attend In-Service Training! As Christina enthusiastically puts it: “YES! Go for it!”
